Below are the issues on the agenda for THIMUN-Singapore 2008:

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

1st Committee (Disarmament and International Security)

Fostering democratic progress in Myanmar

Maintaining international peace and security in South-east Asia in response to climate change

Combating the illegal small arms trade in South Asia

Rights of national sovereignty against incursions by neighboring states in light of the Colombian incursion in Ecuador.

2nd Committee (Economic and Legal)

The exploitation of African countries by industrialized and industrializing countries

Rendering assistance to poor mountain countries in overcoming obstacles in socio-economic and ecological areas

Establishing and implementing trade policies to help reduce poverty and inequality

Question of a South-east Asian free trade zone.

3rd Committee (Social, Humanitarian and Cultural)

Measures to ensure the protection of journalists

Measures to prevent the dissemination of racist and xenophobic materials

Protection of cultural and world heritage sites from looting and/or development

The protection of cultural identity in an age of globalised media

5th Committee (Administration and Budgetary)

The administration and budgetary aspects of the financing of the UN peacekeeping operations

Review of the efficiency of the administrative and financial functioning of the UN

The situation concerning the Oil-for-food Programme and measures to prevent corruption in UN operations

Strengthening of the UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme

6th Committee (Administration and Budgetary)

Establishing a system of justice within the UN to deal with UN officials, employees and tasked missions including peacekeeping forces

Question of compensation to civilian victims or their surviving heirs of armed conflict

Establishing procedures with regards to the International Year of Reconciliation 2009

Reviewing the Geneva Convention of 1949 in the light of the changing nature of armed conflict
